Mothers Day is just about a week away now, dear reader. And I don't know if you have given any thought to what your Mother would like to receive. I thought I'd put a few ideas out there for you to gawk at and ponder about and see if there is something I have posted about that would suit her fancy. But before we get to the pictures and links, I have a little question for you.
Is Mothers Day your favorite holiday? No? I don't think I've ever met a person that has claimed Mothers Day as the best holiday of the year. Not a single, solitary one.
Might be that on Mothers Day we are lonesome for a Mom who has passed on, or for a relationship we wish could be better. Might be that we Moms still have all kinds of work to do, care to give, mouths to feed, bums to change and dishes to scrub. Just the nature of the job, isn't it. I think Mom and Work might be the same word. I'm looking into it. I wrote a little post about it last Mothers Day called Frazzled Mothers Day Confession. If you'd like to read it, feel free.
Last year about a month before Mothers Day, my sweet sister in law Mary had a really brilliant idea. "Won't all of you sisters come to my house the Saturday before Mothers Day for a fun luncheon, and we can just be together and put our feet up and eat and chat and enjoy the afternoon. Don't bring your kids, just bring yourself." is what she said.
And so we did. (All 9 of us, my mother in law included.)
And it was so much fun. We didn't change bums, or fold laundry, or scrub cheerios off the kitchen floor. We just chatted and laughed and talked about how great it was to have a little break. We told stories about our kids and talked about how great it was to be a Mom, and how lucky we were to have kids and how nice it was to have a break and how Moms need a break sometimes, because it helps them be better Moms.
Which is exceedingly true.
In case you didn't know it.
That fun luncheon made my Mothers Day sparkle like none other. A nice big dose of rejuvenation. (That, and the fact that MyHandsomeHusband did all of the dish scrubbing and meal cooking on Mothers Day.) My sisters in laws and I are planning to make the Mothers Day Luncheon a tradition, which I am thrilled about.
The moral of this long winded story, is this. This Mothers Day if you are a Mom, give yourself a little break won't you? Make a lunch date with your BFF, hide in the bathroom and paint your toenails, take a walk in the park with your sister, have a massage, drink a diet coke and eat chocolate while you soak in the bath reading a good book, or take your Mom out to see a play.
And good heavens, don't feel guilty about it! Just indulge yourself for a little while.
You deserve it. :)
